About the study

This study focuses on the names Sackfield and Sackville. It orginally started as a study of my own ancestry and then broadened out to try to trace all Sackvilles and Sackfields.

Variant names

Besides Sackfield and Sackville, I have come across Shackfield and Zacksfield.

Name origin

The name is said to have originated in Normandy, and to have been brought over to the UK at the time of William the Conqueror.

Historical occurrences of the name

The name Sackville was the family name of the Earls of Dorset, and it is linked to Knole in Kent, and Withyham and Buckhurst in Sussex. The author Vita Sackville-West is associated with this family.

The Sackfield family appear to have originated in the Llanasa area of Flintshire, North Wales in the 17th & 18th centuries. The family moved into South Lancashire towards the end of the 18th century, with a substantial number of members moving to the USA in the 1850s and later.

There are a limited number of other Sackville families including one, mainly centred in Canada, who appear to have emigrated to Canada in the 1830s from South West Scotland, and one with British Indian connections.

Name frequency

It is a comparatively rare name. Between 1837 and 1940, 339 Sackfield/Sackville births are recorded in England and Wales, and 207 marriages involving a Sackfield/Sackville. Of these 267 births and 148 marriages are linked to the Lancashire family.

Distribution of the name

There are now more Sackfields/Sackvilles in North America than in the UK, with small representations in Australia and New Zealand.

Data

Data on English/Welsh births, marriages and deaths held from 1837 to 2000. Church records for the Lancashire/ North Wales area held. Descendents of a Lancashire marriage in 1792 fully documented (some 1500 descendants). Many miscellaneous records also extracted (wills, probate, censuses, emigration/immigration to US records etc).
