The Revell name has always intrigued me, ever since my genealogical journey began several decades ago. The Revells from Revelstoke in Devonshire - how exactly did (if it did) the surname tie-in to the parish name? Was the family related to the aristocracy there, or did they simply begin using the name as an identifier?
'My' Revells made the brave journey from England to New Zealand aboard the William Bryan in 1841, beginning their new lives in a very young New Plymouth.
But I know of another, unrelated Revell family which had emigrated from Ireland and settled in Christchurch (NZ); so even in a small country with a not-so-common surname, not everyone is related.
I guess this is a great part of what makes me intrigued enough to begin a One Name Study, to discover the patterns and the origins of Revell families around the world. I also hope to be able to highlight some of the interesting characters I meet along the way, and have my research be useful to others.
(that I have found so far:) Reavell, Revel, Revelle, Revill, Rivell, Revele
