It took me over 12 years to find my O'CONNELL line in Ireland, which was one of the reasons I had started researching my family to begin with. After 16 years of research, I have no further information on the family and at this point I doubt I will find more.
After discussions with a few other O'Connell's, it was decided that we needed to take a different approach to researching the O'Connell lines. We then decided it was time to register the One-Name Study and see if we can group the families together like the yDNA Project is already doing (see below for more details).
This project will be large and I hope that I am able to encourage others with the O'CONNELL surname to assist with the project.
We are currently researching the following variants of the name O'Connell: Connell, Cannell, Connall, Conell, Conall, Connill, Connull, Connel, Connal, Connul, Canell, Cannel, O'Connall, O'Conell, McConnell and Connelly.
I am in the beginning stages of this study and have been working on gathering census data.
The O'Connell yDNA Project is not administered by me, but I am working closely with one of the admins of the project. If you are interested in testing and joining the project, you can do so at Family Tree DNA.
