This is the Guild web site for my One-Name Study of MOWBRAY and variants.

Variant names

There have been more than 200 variant spellings of the name, but the major ones are
Moubray (in Scotland); Mowberry (Northants) and Mowbrey (London).

Name origin

The name originates in the Normandy village of Montbray. The story of its arrival in England is explained on my personal web site, with the link given below.

Historical occurrences of the name

Most Mowbray family members will know that the Dukedom of Norfolk was held by Mowbrays for a few generations. This line died out in the time of Richard III.

Distribution of the name

The top 3 counties for Mowbray origins over the years were Durham, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. Since then the name has spread over the UK and Scotland and is represented in USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Data

The database holds some 10,000 persons from the 1500's to 2000. It has been gleaned from IGI, England and Wales civil registration indexes and many UK and US census records. All the English, Welsh and Scottish census data up to 1901 has been captured.
