Guild of One-Name Studies
One-name studies, Genealogy
This is a new study for me. Although I have been researching my family tree for some time I have only now decided to try and research one name.
Unfortunately I did not get to know my grandmother very well as she died when I was only 2 years old,
but I have been told she was a wonderful woman who always had time for her family
Emily was the youngest of 10 surviving children, she had 3 brothers and 6 sisters, and they lived on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent England.
Their father Charles George Lippingwell born Sept 1859 on The Isle of Sheppey and was a farm Laborer, mainly on Sheppey and for a while he worked on the mainland at Tong near Sittingbourne Kent.
The reason the spelling of the surname changed at this point was because Charles's father John Lippingwell died in January 1861. Charles was just 2 years old and his brother Joseph John Lippingwell was born January 1861.
Their mother Jane Pilcher born 1836 re-married quite quickly after her husbands death and by October 1861 she had re-married for the 3rd time to John Leonard West.
On the 1871 census the name was spelt as Leppenwell instead of Lippingwell, probably because Jane could not read and write very well, or that it was just the person doing the census spelt that way, but that is how it has remained in our family up to today
I have so far found 12 variants of the name Leppenwell on the Find my past and Ancestry websites
