My mother is a Giltrap by birth and the surname has always fascinated me. For the last 25 years I have been collecting any and all Giltrap references that I have come across and have been trying to collate them into family trees and family groups, hoping that ultimately all the groups are connected.
My understanding is that the family was originally English, and the surname Giltrap may have originated from the surname Gilthorpe. The first Giltraps appeared in Southern Ireland in the 17th or 18th century, mostly in the Counties of Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford.
I now have quite an extensive collection of Giltrap information, mostly from the UK and Ireland but also some from Australia, New Zealand and the US. I am always keen to make new Giltrap links and to add different lines to the family tree.
More recently, I have started to trace the military careers of the Giltraps who have served in British army regiments in the 19th century.
