The Capin study grew out of the Capon research as it became obvious that the Capin spelling was leading back to Wales and tales of hardship and sea journeys.
As my Capon study matured, it became difficult to reconcile the origin of the Capon name with the sparse Scottish Cappins. I finally found some clearly inscribed grave stones in a Scottish Highland Cemetery; but did not know where it was located. Much later I found a dictionary of rare Scottish surnames, giving the name origins as the district of Appin by Loch Linhe. It appears that most of these Cappins left Scotland during the clearances, with many appearing uncertain of their name origin and their spelling. There are enough examples in existing registers to establish good evidence of this.
