News May 2019.The Guild’s web team has begun work to integrate Philip Dance’s research into the Guild’s main website, one-name.org. We hope that this will provide a broader audience for his work, research that still remains highly informative to those pursuing the study of surnames and one-name studies. As part of this integration, we will correct errors such as broken links that have inevitably crept in over the past decade. 31 August 2009. It is four months since I started this task. The Bibliography section is now complete (in first draft as are all sections at present). Phil wrote, “Uk and Ireland are in a separate bibliography, to be merged later.” The separate bibliographies are now at least in the same section, as Phil intended. They are within the Location sub-section, though still not in the “logical” place under Europe. However the “Author Index”, which appears to be a combined list of all print references, and which appears to be derived from a database or speadsheet to which I do not have access, still does not include the UK and Ireland references. I may drop this list because: all its references are duplicated in the relevant subject and location pages of the bibliography section, upkeep of such a list would be a daunting task, it makes a very long web page. There are some other very long pages which I’m inclined to split too (notably the Europe page). However this means extending the page structure to two more levels (Bibliography > By location > World > Europe > UK and Ireland > England etc.). I’m not sure if I can twist the menu software that far! 22 July 2009. I have today completed the transcription of the Statistics section of this Surname Studies web site. This comprises the Statistics, Leaders and Given menu items of Phil’s site. The sections of the new site completed now are | Home | Distribution | Variance | Statistics |. Looking at the sections menu above, I see that this is only half of the number of sections. (Sigh!) However I think it’s well over half in content. Well, if I tell myself that it’ll keep me going! Please note that these are still first drafts. As I wrote on 1 July: Please do NOT trawl the site for spelling errors, typos, bad links, incorrect HTML, etc. at this stage. I want this task to be done in a systematic way when the site is complete, and I will call for volunteers for these tasks at that stage. Please see also the Tributes page. Thanks to those who readily gave permission for their comments to be copied here. Thanks for the continuing encouragement of the informal “support group.” I am away for three weeks from Friday (24th July) so little will be done in that time. Mike 1 July 2009. The planning of the site structure has been completed and the new structure is shown on the Site Map page. A start has been made in transferring content from the old site to the new site. The sections of the new site that have been completed as of today are Home, Distribution and Variance. Planning of the page design for the new site was done at an early stage and developed further in the light of comments from the support group. The use of a style sheet and separate javascript pages enables design features to be altered across the whole site at once. The design is now fairly settled. Thank you to all those who contributed to this process. The whole process is taking longer than might have been expected, partly because of the labyrinthine nature of the old site. Many of the pages are excessively long (in my view) and I have therefore split them into shorter, hopefully more manageable pages. The menu system now has a multi-level structure, which hopefully can be navigated reasonably easily using the expanding/contracting left-hand menu. The delay is also partly because of my holiday commitments which will continue when I visit France in August. Please do NOT trawl the site for spelling errors, typos, bad links, incorrect HTML, etc. at this stage. I want this task to be done in a systematic way when the site is complete, and I will call for volunteers for these tasks at that stage. Please note that certain quotations were shown on the old site with permission of copyright owners. I am assuming temporarily that this permission will be extended to the new site, but I have not yet got round to asking those owners. I intend to do so. If you are one such, please would you contact me at cree at one-name dot org. 1 May 2009. The domain name surnamestudies.co.uk was registered in the name of the Guild of One-Name Studies and Mike Spathaky started work on a new, restructured web site using the content of Phil Dance’s Modern British Surnames.
