40 Years and Still a One-Name Society – The story of the Braund One-Name Study

    Guild contact: Julie Goucher

In this webinar we welcome Guild members Janet Few and Chris Braund.

    Braund Society

The Braund Society have just celebrated their 40th anniversary. This is the story of a one-name society and its activities.

Come and learn about how the society started, what we have done in the past, what we do now and how we plan to evolve to remain relevant in today’s family history world. There will be suggestions that might be applicable to your one-name study, as well as warnings of pitfalls to avoid. There is references relevant to research outside of the UK, as the study has links to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and South Africa.

Janet and Chris are long-standing members of the Guild of One-Name Studies and have been involved in the Braund One-Name Society since its inception 40 years ago.

Janet is a well-known speaker and is currently the President of the Family History Federation. Chris is the President of the Devon Family History Society and will be familiar to attendees at Guild conferences. You can follow Janet and Chris on Twitter, using the following:

Webinar - Spotlight on ..Oxfordshire DNA and Surname Projects

    12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Webinar - Spotlight on ..Oxfordshire DNA and Surname Projects

    Guild contact: Julie Goucher

In this webinar we welcome Guild members, Richard Merry and Jessica Feinstein both of whom are also members of Oxfordshire Family History Society along with the last of our trio, Sue Honoré.

Copyright Oxfordshire FHS 2021, used with permission

In this interview with Richard, Jessica and Sue, each will speaker about specific elements of the project, covering the history of the Oxfordshire DNA (Richard) and Surname (Sue) projects; the process and challenges of doing these interlinked projects; data collections – finding and managing them to support the projects; process of creating a book on the topics (All) and getting it to publication (Jessica). Key findings/stories. Next steps. This is going to be a fascinating webinar and will be of interest to family historians, one-name study researchers and social historians.

This is a subject, that includes the pulling together different data sources and volunteers to achieve new insights and findings on surnames in a geographic area. There are some references to other parts of the globe, but the main focus is on the English county of Oxfordshire. You can read further information on the project HERE

    Richard H. Merry
Richard is a retired soil and environmental scientist and a graduate of the universities of Tasmania and Adelaide. He was always interested in family history and began more serious researching about thirty years ago – his paternal great-grandfather was born in Eynsham. He has been active in his local genealogy society in Adelaide for some time, administers or co-administers four DNA group projects and the Oxfordshire Surnames Project, and is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

    Sue Honoré
Sue has spent her career as a manager in various international business and academic roles but has wider interests and has accumulated degrees in biology, business, networked learning and local history. She has been researching her own family history since the early 1980s and has been volunteering with the Oxfordshire Family History Society for nine years as the journal editor and joint administrator of the DNA and surname projects.

    Jessica Feinstein

Jessica has had a career in academic publishing and is a qualified genealogist. In addition to teaching family history, Jessica volunteers for several genealogy societies and edits a family history journal.

    About the webinars:
