About Members’ Websites

An increasing number of our members use a website to publish and share their one-name study. A website has advantages over more traditional methods of publishing. It can be viewed by anyone who has access to the internet, anywhere in the world, at any time. Unlike a book, which is ‘set’ at the point of publication, a website can be updated as frequently as you like. As you make new discoveries, they can be added to your website and will be immediately available for others to see.

As a Guild member you can have a web presence:

  • by setting up a One-Name Study Profile page
  • as part of our Members’ Websites Program (MWP)
  • by registering a website you have already created

Study Profile Pages

The simplest way to have an internet presence is through a study profile page. This is a single web page giving details of your study. Setting up up a profile page is no more difficult than using a word-processor and is a first step in publicising your research. You can have a profile page, even if you are just starting out on your study. It will help anyone searching for the surname you are studying to find your one-name study.

You can include a link to a more complex website on your profile page when you are ready.

Read more about study profile pages.

Members’ Websites Program (MWP)

Through our Members’ Websites Program (MWP) various types of website can be created. They are hosted on the Guild web server, which means you don’t have to pay for separate hosting. The members of the MWP team can help you to set up your new website, or to migrate an existing one. Your website will remain on our server (unless you wish otherwise) after you leave the Guild, although you will not be able to update it once you are no longer a member.

  • Find out more about the Members’ Website Program.
  • Browse the websites in the Members’ Websites Program.

If you’re not ready to set up a full website yet, you can still have an internet presence through a Guild profile page.

Independent Website

Perhaps you already have a website that you have developed for the name you are studying? You can register any existing website as a Guild ONS (One-Name Study) website and include a link on your profile page. Links to independent websites will remain active as long as you are a Guild member, but will not be preserved beyond your membership or lifetime. Alternatively you can transfer the site over to become part of the MWP, in which case it will be preserved.

See the full list of all registered Guild ONS websites here.

DNA Project Websites

Many members have a DNA project as part of their one-name study and the Guild can help you set up a website for your DNA project.
