The Hatt One-Name study commenced in 1998 and the name was registered with the Guild around 1990
The registered variants of the name are: HAT and HATTE.
The Hatt surname has a very long history and is possibly Scandanavian in origin. In the UK the name predates the completion of the Domesday Book. Although the name has a low distribution, evidence of it can be found throughout Northern Europe.
Hatts have generally managed to avoid the perils of greatness, but mention should be made of Jerome Hatt who in 1664 founded the Kronenbourg Brewery in France. The Hatt name remained associated with the business whilst it remained in private hands.
In the 1881 census a total of 728 Hatts are recorded, representing 0.0028% of the population ( or one in 35,869)
In the 1881 census the distribution of the name by county: London 27.7%,Surrey 17.3% Hampshire 8.1%, Buckinghamshire 7.7%, Berkshire 7.1%, Essex 5.9%, Oxfordshire 4.4%, Aberdeenshire 3.6%, Wiltshire 3.3%, Yorkshire 3.2%, Somerset 1.4%. All other counties represent a total of 10.3%.
All of the Hatt entries from the General Register for England and Wales have been recorded. The study also includes numerous entries from Parish records, and information collected by other Hatt researchers.
A Hatt Family History Society has been functioning since 1990 and currently has around 90 members. We publish a quarterly Journal which is distributed to members, copies also go to National libraries in this country and one in the USA, also to a few County Family History Societies and to the Guild. We hold a Hatt Gathering every three years
