About the Glasspool One-Name Study

The purpose of my GLASSPOOL One Name Study is to trace the history of the men and women born with that name. What are its earliest origins? Where did they live? What did they do?

I am looking to build a series of GLASSPOOL trees that finally link together.

I also want to help link people interested in the surname with each other and their ancestors.

The information below is work in progress, that will be updated whenever new information comes to light

Variants

GLASSPOOL has been spelt in many ways, here are a few I have found.

GLASS pel, pole, poole poll

GLAS pole pel pell poll pool poole

GLOS pool spole, spoole

Origin of the surname

The earliest mention of the name GLASSPOOL I have found was in 1587 when Plas-Turton (nr. Cardiff Wales) was described as the 'manor or lordship of GLASPULL alias Tiverton' and in the following century as 'Placestourton otherwise GLASSPOOLE'.

Other sources say it derives from residence by a 'blue' pool, examples of which are found in Hampshire and Dorset. The Blue pool was caused by blue clay. Glas can also mean clear or clean.

Agnes GLASPOOLE married John SMITH at Fareham Hampshire on June 25th 1598, this is the earliest recording of the name.

Historical occurrences

MANOR OF PLASTURTON.

Plasturton was a farmhouse demolished 1895. It stood on the site of an ancient house near the Cowbridge Road and the Taff west bank, on the west side of the present Cathedral Road. 'The Manor or Lordship of Placestourton, otherwise Glasspoole,' was held by Bawdrip in the 17th century. It was in 1753 the subject of a Chancery suit in the family of Mathew of Llandaff. (Chanc. Proc. 1714—58. Winter, No. 592.) It is, however, doubtful whether Plasturton was actually a manor.
