SHILLAKER and SHELLAKER are the modern variants which are the object of this study.
I do not consider the Lancashire name SHALLAKER and its variants SHALLIKER and SHOLLIKER, or the Devon name SHILLABEER and its many variants, to be connected.
Deviant spellings which are not in current use include SHELAKAR, SHEILAKER, SHELACRE, SHELLACRE, SHELLAKERS, SHILLACRE, SHILACRE.
The earliest found reference is to a Richard SHELAKAR, born about 1616, in Loddington, Leicestershire.
The most famous Shillaker was James Frederick (1870-1943), MP for Acton, London 1929-31.
43 SHILLAKERs in 8 main families: a cluster of three around Hambleton, Rutland, and five in and near Market Deeping, Lincolnshire. 24 SHELLAKERs in 7 main families: three in a cluster in Horninghold, Leicestershire, recorded using the spelling SHELLACRE (returns covered by a single enumerator); one in Tugby, Leicestershire; one in Rutland and two in central London who originated in Rutland.
Three principal distinct branches of the family are evident: about 10 SHELLAKERs; about 50 'Rutland' SHILLAKERs; and 'Deeping' SHILLAKERs, about 100 strong. Most are by now widely distributed around eastern and southern England.
It is estimated that about 10 SHELLAKERs and about 150 SHILLAKERs are alive today, still mainly in England. There is known to be one family in Scotland, one in Canada, one in California, one in Illinois and one in South Australia. The ONS database contained 128 SHILLAKERs (rank 28383) and 5 SHELLAKERs as at September 2002. Shillaker and especially Shellaker are therefore very rare names.
These will be published on a private web site available only to registered members.
