About the study
This study undertakes research into the genealogy and family history of all persons with the surname of Lyne. We are very glad to try and assist any family researcher working on a Lyne family.
There are none in this one-name study. Although the Line family is distinct in itself and not part of this study, the name Lyne does occasionally appear in the records written as Line. Where such entries appaer relevant to the Lyne study, this information is collected.
The origin of the Lyne family is not at all clear. Surname academics give the origin variously as deriving from the latter part of a woman's first name (Adel-line) or alternatively as deriving from the dweller by a lime tree. However, at least one Lyne family claims descent from the de la Lynde family of Norman origin and their coat of arms granted in 1558 is a varient of the ancient de la Lynde arms.
In the 1841 census there were 963 people with the name Lyne.
In the 1881 census there were 1,299 people with the name Lyne.
In the 1911 census there were 1,305 people with the name Lyne.
Distribution of the name
At the end of the sixteenth century there were seemingly unconnected Lyne families in Cornwall, Hampshire, Gloucestershire/Oxfodshire, Lincolnshire, Cheshire and Co Kerry in Ireland. Today the name is much more widely spread in England, USA, Australia, Canada and elsewhere abroad.
Any and all data on members of the Lyne family is collected and working family trees of the various Lyne families maintained.
