A study of the Fergusons and related names, initially concentrated in the UK
Variants include Fergusson, Furgusson and Farquharson
Obviously derives from the son of Fergus and believed to originate in Scotland
Over 21,000 Fergusons were recorded in Great Britain at the 1881 census and, according to the Office of National Statistics there were over 26,000 in England and Wales alone by 2006.
Distribution of the name
To Date the areas covered include the counties of Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland, County Durham and Lancashire, with census returns to at least 1901. Known strays to and from these areas have also been included.
Information held includes fairly comprehensive data from the above, collected from the IGI, BMD Indexes, and Censuses from before 1837 to 1911. Where possible the individuals have been linked into family groups.
