About the study

I first started researching my family history over 20 years ago. At that time I worked in London and, at the request of a relative, carried out a few searches in the GRO indexes then held at St Catherine's House. Once I started I was 'hooked'! In 1992 I moved to Buckinghamshire, which is the county with the highest concentration of the surname BRACKLEY found in the 1881 census (not the reason for the house move!) and the county in which I have found most of my paternal direct ancestors.

I joined the Guild of One-Name Studies and registered the surname BRACKLEY (my maiden name) as a one-name study following my attendance at the Halstead Seminar in London in November 2003.

I would like to hear from anyone who has the surname BRACKLEY in their family and will try to help with their research if I am able from the data I have so far collected.

Name origin

BRACKLEY means 'dweller at the clearing in the bracken'. The surname BRACKLEY possibly originates from Brackley in Northamptonshire.

I have transcribed the GRO Births, Marriages and Deaths indexes from 1837 to 2000. I have also extracted a significant amount of BRACKLEY entries from the censuses for Buckinghamshire and some for other areas.
